Sometimes you have to read between the numbers. Revenue is down. Is business actually slow, or did a client pay late? Payroll is up. Is that a problem, or was it a planned investment that needs more time to produce a return? Margins changed. Is it an expense issue, a pricing issue, or something else entirely?

The number gets your attention. The questions help you figure out what’s actually happening.

So the next time you review your financials, ask: What changed? Why did it change? What decision does that impact? Because sometimes your numbers will tell you that’s not the problem.

What number or financial report gives you the most questions? Let us know in the comments.

One report can tell you something useful. It just can’t tell you everything.

Your P&L shows one part of the picture.
Your Balance Sheet shows another.
Your cash position adds another piece.

The clarity comes from reading them together.

That’s what we’re walking through at our October 8 Financial Empowerment Roundtable: Reading Your Financial Statements.

If you receive financial reports but still aren’t quite sure what they’re telling you, this conversation is for you.

Financial statements are useful. But sometimes the

Financial statements are useful. But sometimes the most valuable part is the conversation that happens around them.

Looking at what changed.
Noticing what doesn’t make sense.
Talking through what the business needs next.
Connecting the numbers to the decisions you’re actually making.

That’s the difference between simply receiving financial reports and having someone help you use them.

At Mitchell Consulting, we believe the numbers should give you more than information. They should give you clarity.

That’s also the conversation we’re continuing at our October 8 Financial Empowerment Roundtable: Reading Your Financial Statements.

If you’ve been getting the reports but still aren’t quite sure what to do with them, join us.

Hiring help can solve a capacity problem, but the wrong kind of help can create a whole new one.

Before you jump from “I need help” to “I need an employee,” get clear on what your business actually needs. Full-time capacity? Part-time support? A contractor? An outsourced partner? Fractional expertise?

The goal isn’t just getting work off your plate. It’s choosing the right kind of support for the stage your business is actually in.

If you could add one type of support to your business right now, what would you need them to own? Let us know in the comments.

You have the reports, but do you know what they’re actually telling you?

Your Profit & Loss Statement can tell you how the business performed.

Your Balance Sheet shows you where the business stands.

Your Cash Flow Statement helps you understand how cash is moving.

And when you start looking at them together, you get a much clearer picture of what’s happening in your business and what it may be able to support next.

That’s what we’re talking about at October’s Financial Empowerment Roundtable: Reading Your Financial Statements.

This isn’t an accounting class. It’s a practical conversation about understanding your numbers well enough to ask better questions and make better decisions.

Bring your questions. Better yet, bring a financial decision you’re trying to make.

Feeling overwhelmed can make hiring feel like the obvious next move.

But before you add payroll, ask a few more questions:
- Is this a permanent need?
- Could it be simplified?
- Automated?
- Outsourced?
- Handed to someone already on your team?

And just as important: what is it costing the business for you to keep doing it yourself?

The goal isn’t to add payroll every time something feels heavy. It’s to make sure the right work is sitting with the right person.

Growth has a funny way of changing your job description.

What needed your attention when the business was smaller may not be what needs it now.

Sometimes growth means better systems. Sometimes it means bringing in more expertise. Sometimes it means finally handing off something you’ve been carrying simply because you always have.

The question is: What does your business need from you at this stage?

What’s one part of your role that has changed as your business has grown?

Just because the money is in your account doesn’t mean it’s available to spend.

As your business grows, payroll, taxes, debt, vendors, owner pay, and other commitments may already have a claim on that cash.

So before your next big decision, ask: How much of this money is actually available?

A profitable business can still feel tight on cash

A profitable business can still feel tight on cash.

And that matters when you’re trying to answer questions like:

Can we hire?
Can I pay myself more?
Can we afford the next investment?
Can we take on the next opportunity without creating a cash problem later?

That’s what we’re talking about at September’s Financial Empowerment Roundtable: Cash Flow vs. Profit.

We’ll talk through what profit tells you, what cash flow tells you, and why you need both when you’re making decisions about what your business can support next.

And Roundtable is exactly what it sounds like. Bring your questions. Bring the financial decision you’ve been thinking through. Let’s talk about it.
