Less DIY, More Delegation

I Failed at Hiring the First Time I Tried

Think about your vision for your business. Does it involve having a staff? Do you imagine being able to take time off and still have things run smoothly? Do you dream about saying goodbye to a task you dread because you’ve got someone else to do it for you?

The first step to making that vision come true is to delegate.

Delegating is a big part of a lot of women’s visions but it’s intimidating at the start. Your business is your baby and you aren’t necessarily ready to hand it over to a babysitter. That’s completely fine.

But I see you over there, CEO, and you need to take a step back. Right now, you’re doing too much.

As much as I love the independent spirit of women entrepreneurs, it can sometimes get the best of us. We think we need to be DIYing every bit of our business or else we aren’t truly independent. In actuality, all that leads to is exhaustion.

When you delegate to another person, YOU are still the CEO. In fact, delegating gives you a chance to step further into the CEO role by supervising instead of working on the ground floor.

Delegating also helps your business flourish by allowing everyone to work in their genius zone. Not only does this make everyone more productive and deliver higher quality service, it raises morale because everyone is doing what they love.

If you’re ready to get delegating, here’s how you can start:

  1. Think about your zone of excellence. Your zone of excellence is the zone where you are capable of completing the task but you aren’t an expert. Chances are, your zone of excellence is someone else’s genius zone. Delegate to that person instead.
  2. Ease into it. I recommend only delegating one task at a time and hiring a person for only a few hours at first. This way you’ll both feel comfortable with the process and don’t feel rushed or overwhelmed.

If financial management is only in your zone of excellence, consider hiring us on a fractional basis as your Virtual CFO. Read more about our services here.
