Planning for Uncertainty in Your Small Business

I can sometimes look back and remember some of the benefits that my corporate job once gave me, with the main benefit being a sense of security and certainty. It was nice to know I had a consistent paycheck coming from week-to-week. Yet I wouldn’t trade my business for that life again, and I’ll tell you why.

For one thing, entrepreneurship gives me so much flexibility. It’s what’s allowed me to create the life I had always imagined for myself. (Learn more about aligning your business with your vision here). For another, it’s possible to mitigate risk and build security as an entrepreneur. The secret? Being proactive.

You can take control of your business and do your best to insulate it from the unexpected (like a pandemic or a recession) by focusing on three crucial aspects of your business that are essential to its success. They are your health, your finances, and your clients.

Without your health, you can’t run your business to its full capacity. (Find out more about self care as a business owner here).

Many business owners have been faced with this fact during the coronavirus outbreak. When you’re sick or burnt out, you can’t deliver the same quality of services. We all know the basics of maintaining your health like eating a variety of fresh foods and staying active but there are a few particular tips to keep in mind as a business owner. For instance, you should create clear boundaries between work, life, and your clients in order to keep the balance. I would also suggest taking advantage of your open schedule and allowing yourself to take a break from time to time during the day.

Maintain your finances because cashflow is what keeps your business afloat. (Read more about maintaining your finances here).

To be diligent with your finances is to be strategic about your money moves, set aside funds for emergencies and other unexpected circumstances, and keep a budget that gives you the agility to change course at a moment’s notice. (Get the small business budgeting guide here). If your original business plan isn’t bringing in the same profits, you have to have the funds available to pivot over time.

You couldn’t maintain a business without clients so reach out to them early when there are signs of changing times.

Towards the start of lockdown, I checked in with all of my clients and evaluated where they were at. Many of them were struggling and didn’t know what to do. Thankfully, I could see more clearly from an outside perspective what changes they’d be able to make in order to keep their business going. As they continued to make profits, they were able to continue to stay on as clients.

The longest lasting entrepreneurs I know are proactive instead of reactive. Focus on maintaining your health, finances, and clients, and your business can survive anything. Preparing for a Networking Event

Uh oh, you just got invited to a networking event! You can tell it could be a great opportunity to put you and your business out there but the thought of schmoozing with a bunch of strangers makes your stomach turn.

Though not the most appealing, these events can be powerful! Just look at my business: I’ve built my business from the ground up, solely through my network connections. And I’m not a social butterfly by any means, I just know how to make the most of networking opportunities. After that, I let my work speak for itself. (I give you the tools to get this mindset yourself here).

To be successful at one of these events, keep these things in mind: (1) go in wanting purely to create a relationship or nurture an existing one, regardless of your business, (2) Ask yourself “Who do I want to meet that can get me closer to the position I want to be in?” and “Who’s involved in an organization whose ideal clients are my ideal clients?” (3) focus on quality over quantity first and foremost but always stay open to expanding your network, (4) use this as an opportunity to demonstrate your expertise.

(1) Your end goal may be to make a sale but don’t treat it as your one and only priority. Instead, go in with the intention of making and deepening genuine relationships with people in your line of work or in your area. What networking ultimately is is simple, it’s building relationships. (Find out how to use your self-knowledge to build better relationships here).

People can tell when you’re only talking to them because there’s something you want versus when you’re honestly interested in and listening to what they have to say and getting to know them. No healthy, beneficial relationship begins on such a sour note.

(2) Consider who your target is. Who is in the right position to help you grow as an entrepreneur? Who is already involved with your ideal client? (Get more questions to get your business in alignment with your vision here).

If there’s an online RSVP where you can see the guest list, you can plot ahead of time who you want to make it a point of talking to. An online event is ideal for this. If not, try and do a once-over right when you get there. Know the network you’re trying to reach so that you already know who to look for.

(3) It’s more about the quality of your relationships than the quantity.

Quantity is beneficial in the long run but if you rush into trying to meet as many people as possible on a surface level, without taking the time to actually get to know anyone, you won’t have a very useful network.

(4) Now’s your time to shine! The most effective way to get people to turn their attention into action is by establishing yourself as an expert. Make it known how much you know about and are skilled at the service your business provides. Impostor syndrome standing in your way? I’ve got your back.

You want to leave the event having people closely link you with expertise in the service you provide. If enough people have made that connection, they’ll think of you first when they need someone who has your skillset.

Anyone can network – and have fun with it too! Come in with the right attitude, a game plan, a genuine desire to build relationships, and the ability to market yourself, and you’re golden.

Why Self Care Matters in Your Small Business

You want to be that businesswoman who’s confident, who’s got it all together, and is charging what she wants, all while never seeming to break a sweat.

Yet day after day you find yourself overwhelmed and underpaid, and when you look in the mirror after working nonstop for hours on end, it shows.

What if I told you that the path to becoming the empowered CEO you want to be is simpler than you think? That the answer lies in just putting yourself first?

Here’s the deal: self care is essential to a thriving business. I’m not talking about bubble baths and facials, though go ahead and pamper yourself if that makes you feel good, I’m talking about being thoughtful about where you expend your energy. (Read more about self care as an entrepreneur here).

You might be working yourself to the bone right now but burnout is likely right around the corner. Instead of letting yourself turn into a ball of nerves that doesn’t enjoy running her business, you need to set some boundaries. You can’t sustain working around the clock without time to retreat every once in a while.

If you’re struggling with the idea of limiting your work time because it’s easier to put your wellbeing on the back burner in order to grow your business, I think I can change your mind.

Taking care of yourself helps you grow and maintain your business for so many reasons. Since you don’t have all day, I’ll keep it to my top four: stress reduction, regaining creativity, productivity, and enjoying life outside of your business.

You reduce your stress.

It can be a difficult transition to designate and stick to only working within a certain chunk of the day when you’re used to working all the time. You might only be able to imagine a schedule with boundaries being more stressful because you might have to walk away mid-project. I see where you’re coming from but let’s be honest, it’s more stressful to never take a break than it is to set boundaries.

You regain creativity.

Have you ever been trying to solve a problem for so long that you can’t even see straight? Then when you walk away and come back, the solution seems so clear? That’s because giving yourself some time away allows you to think more creatively. Give yourself a new perspective and it could completely transform your business for the better.

You show up as your best self and are more productive.

Your clients notice when you’re overworked and it often comes out in the work itself. It gets hard to focus after working for a long time, especially if you’re the CEO, CFO, Marketing Director, Administrative Assistant, and every other role in your business. (Learn more about being your own CFO here). It’s only once you set boundaries and get strategic with your time that you’ll be able to produce your best work.

You get to enjoy the life you’ve created.

Part of the vision you have for your business is all of the things it will give you the flexibility to do and afford. (Find out how to get more in line with your vision here). If you never spend any time outside of your business, you never get to reap the benefits. If you imagined that starting your own business would give you an opportunity to travel, go out and do that! It’s still possible to live your dream life but only if you care for yourself.

Once you stop hustling, slow down, and set boundaries, you’ll discover how much more relaxed, creative, productive, and fulfilled you can be while still running an amazing business.
